Confident Kids Camp Toronto

Confident Kids Camp is a 5-day intensive therapy programme designed to help children with selective mutism prepare for the upcoming school year.

Confident Kids Camp runs every summer in mid to late August at a location near Eglinton Ave W. station. We book up early but are happy to take expressions of interest year round and then contact you when we open registration in January.

Confident Kids Camp utilizes one-on-one support and group therapeutic techniques in simulated classroom environments to give campers the opportunity to practice verbal communication skills with other children and adults. The week includes classroom-like activities, games, psychoeducation about anxiety, visiting entertainers/classes and field trips. "Brave talking" practices are build in to every experience.

Each child will be paired with an adult counselor, trained in behavioral interventions. Daily camp activities attempt to mirror a regular classroom day, with the goal of significant increases in verbal communication through practice, shaping, desensitization, and rewards systems.  These significant increases in speech and confidence have been shown to generalize successfully to the child’s school setting when they return home after the end of camp.

Parent training is included in the cost of camp and is an integral part of your child’s individualized treatment. Parents learn new skills and practice in training sessions with Dr. Helfman and with live coaching. You will be taught strategies to successfully decrease your child’s anxiety and increase their verbal communication.

Confident Kids Camp was developed by Dr. Aimee Kotrba and also has locations in Michigan and Washington DC.
